LabWindows/CVI for Windows 2000/NT/XP, Version 7.1Documentation File© Copyright 1993–2004. National Instruments Corporation. All rights reserved. Product and company names listed are trademarks or trade names of their respective companies. This file contains installation and programming considerations and changes that are too recent to be included in the printed LabWindows/CVI documentation and the LabWindows/CVI Help. The LabWindows/CVI Release Notes contain important information about changes and enhancements made in LabWindows/CVI 7.1. Minimum System RequirementsTo run LabWindows/CVI 7.1, you must have the following items: - Personal computer using a Pentium 600 or higher microprocessor
- Windows 2000/NT SP6/XP
- 800 × 600 resolution (or higher) video adapter
- Minimum of 128 MB of RAM, 256 MB recommended
- 150 MB free hard disk space
- Microsoft-compatible mouse
- Microsoft Internet Explorer 5.0 or later, typical installation
Installing LabWindows/CVINational Instruments suggests that you install the complete LabWindows/CVI 7.1 program to take full advantage of all LabWindows/CVI 7.1 capabilities. If you choose to install with options, select the options you want and follow the on-screen directions. If necessary, you can run the setup program again and install or remove additional files. Before Installation- Install Internet Explorer 5.0 (or later) to access the LabWindows/CVI Help. Install Internet Explorer 5.0.1 (or later) to create or edit ActiveX servers in LabWindows/CVI. You can download Internet Explorer from the Microsoft Web site at http://www.microsoft.com.
- When you install or activate LabWindows/CVI 7.1, your user account must have administrator privileges. When you run LabWindows/CVI for the first time after installation, your user account must have administrator privileges.
- You must explicitly check the Win32 SDK feature of the LabWindows/CVI installer to install the complete Windows SDK from the CD-ROM version of the LabWindows/CVI Full Development System (FDS). Some Windows SDK header and import library files are included when you install the LabWindows/CVI Base Package. The Windows SDK help file is available only with the LabWindows/CVI FDS.
- Be aware that the LabWindows/CVI installation includes the LabWindows/CVI 7.1 Run-time Engine. This version overwrites previous versions of the run-time engine. Thus, after installing LabWindows/CVI 7.1, executables and DLLs generated with previous versions of LabWindows/CVI will automatically use the new LabWindows/CVI 7.1 Run-time Engine.
- If you install LabWindows/CVI onto a network drive, you might encounter an error during installation that prevents files, which are necessary for the IVI Instrument Driver Wizard to function properly, from being installed. This does not affect other functionality in LabWindows/CVI.
Running the InstallationIf you have a previous version of LabWindows/CVI installed on your machine, be sure to install version 7.1 in a different directory or uninstall the older version before installing version 7.1. Complete the following steps to install LabWindows/CVI: - Run setup.exe from the distribution media where the installation files are located.
- On installation startup, the National Instruments LabWindows/CVI 7.1 screen appears. Click Install LabWindows/CVI.
- Continue to follow the instructions on the screen.
After Installation- Installing LabWindows/CVI in a New Directory—If you installed driver or toolkit software for a previous version of LabWindows/CVI and you install LabWindows/CVI 7.1 in a new directory, you must reinstall the LabWindows/CVI portion of the driver or toolkit software into the new LabWindows/CVI directory.
Known Issues- Using Beta Programs—The digital graph functions in LabWindows/CVI 7.1 differ from the digital graph functions in LabWindows/CVI 7.1 Beta. Therefore, you must update any programs you created in LabWindows/CVI 7.1 Beta that include the digital graph. National Instruments recommends you recreate any digital graph controls on user interface resource (.uir) files you created in LabWindows/CVI 7.1 Beta.
- Uninstalling LabWindows/CVI—If you have multiple versions of LabWindows/CVI installed and you uninstall one of the versions, the remaining installation will be missing its file associations, and its automation capabilities will not function properly. To fix this problem, perform a repair installation of the remaining LabWindows/CVI version.
- Making Backup .uir Files—If you have been using LabWindows/CVI 6.0 or earlier, make backup copies of your .uir files. Once you save .uir files in LabWindows/CVI 7.1, the .uir files are no longer compatible with versions 6.0 or earlier. You cannot load .uir files that you have saved in LabWindows/CVI 7.1 in LabWindows/CVI 6.0 or earlier.
- Enumerating ActiveX Controls—On Windows NT 4, some third party products can install an incorrect version of the Component Categories Manager (comcat.dll), which the LabWindows/CVI ActiveX Container uses to enumerate the set of ActiveX Controls on your machine. Refer to article Q183370 on the Microsoft Developer Network (MSDN) for more information about this problem. To replace the incorrect version of comcat.dll, download and run Mdtupdtr.exe from article Q179567 on MSDN.
- Using Excel as an ActiveX Control—If you develop an application that uses Excel as an ActiveX control on a LabWindows/CVI user interface panel, make sure that a separate instance of Excel is not running simultaneously. Otherwise, programmatic calls to the Excel control might not work as expected after the separate Excel application terminates.
